No, It Isn't Really About the List Size
A couple of months ago I hired a new business coach because I have been making some big changes in what I offer and who I am working with. I decided to go all in on a new coach who came recommended to me by a good friend.
He didn’t have a fancy sales page. In fact, I initially hesitated when I saw what he did have up. But what he did have was stellar personal recommendations. I especially loved that his assistant did not block his Inbox from me. Listen, not only do I understand boundaries, I am the queen of boundaries. It is just that there is nothing more frustrating than spending thousands of dollars and not being able to talk directly to the person you hired.
This coach sends a weekly letter TO MY HOUSE by snail mail. Real postage stamps and everything.
In this day and age of endless talk of “how will you scale” and nothing matters unless you are an “8-figure business” with thousands of subscribers, it is very refreshing to see someone who still believes in paying attention to the individual.
I’m seeing this ring so true in my own life. One of my clients is starting her own event that aims to disrupt victim mentality. Sure, you can post endlessly on Instagram and Facebook. But are you aware of what is really working to get people to commit to the event? Personal outreach. She has meticulously messaged hundreds of her contacts and invited them personally to her event—and she has almost reached her goal of 200 attendees! I LOVE her results and I am going to reach out more on a personal level.
You cannot just rely on automated messages to capture someone’s attention. You have to rise above the noise. When was the last time that you:
Wrote a personal note to a past client or prospect?
Sent an unexpected gift?
Sent a DM about their Instagram story?
Sent a Facebook message checking in?
Posted a comment on their blog
Replied to their newsletter? (Okay, I maybe fishing for this one :) )
Don’t be afraid to follow-up and connect personally. It doesn’t have to take a lot of time or effort to reach out to someone. And what if that simple action meant all the difference to your business?
So it is not about the list size. Forget about the numbers and start treating each person as a real human being and make a heart-to-heart connection. And your connection is far more important than the list size.
For the majority of us, it may take less than 100 genuine fans to create a sustainable 6-figure business. And you never know what connections will lead to your next big project or client.
