5 Tips to Bust Task Resistance

task resistanceIf you are like me, you have probably faced task resistance on a big project at some point. I faced major task resistance creating and launching my first online course.  I found myself in a cycle of escaping the big, important work to busy myself with small, insignificant tasks.  My rational brain knew exactly what I should have been doing. It was rallying hard for me to get the work done that matters--the darn course.

Here is what I knew at the time:

  • A course would allow me to help more people because it would be more affordable to those just starting out and far less expensive than working one-on-one with me.
  • It would allow people to work with me even when I am not physically available to be on Skype or blocking off several hours on a client project.
  • It is big leverage point work. If I put in the hours, I would be able to continue to build and leverage this work for years to come.

My lizard, fear-based brain halted all progress in the middle of my project:

  • What if no one visits the sales page--much less purchases the course? Why waste time writing it?
  • I have so much client work that I can't possibly block off a four-hour consecutive block for it. I might as well not do anything.

Anybody?  I was making myself sick with my own nonsense.  Was it launch resistance or an upper limit problem?

If you have ever faced that kind of resistance (or perhaps an upper limit problem), I hope the following action plan I took will help you begin to overcome it:

  • Design slide template

  • Design worksheet template

  • Outline full course

    • Outline full script

    • Identify exercises to include for each section

  • Etc...
  • everything. This hyper-scheduling included some self-love time, existing client work, and other blocks for maintenance tasks (such as social media) so I was realistic about what I could accomplish each week.

#3  Find some accountability buddies. I am grateful that I have made some amazing business buddies. During the course creation, I was part of a mastermind. I asked those ladies to hold me accountable to my new outlines and deadlines. You can also hire someone to help you stay on track. Or, find a way to be publicly accountable so that the thing you are avoiding much less avoidable.

volunteering and favors that I spent time on to make sure they fit my current goals.

What are your strategies to getting the really important (but not urgent) tasks done? Have you ever faced resistance in launching something new?
