One of the most difficult parts of running your own business that no one talks about is visibility. Showing up and putting yourself out there online is EXTREMELY vulnerable. Heck, I still remember the fear I had about just doing a photoshoot, let alone running Facebook ads with pictures of me. But being visible is one simple way you can dramatically grow your business. You can easily double your revenue this year by getting out there to a new audience as well as being in front of your EXISTING followers more often. (This second one is key and it’s something a lot of people forget about.)

As far as HOW to increase you visibility, I’ve found that there are three primary factors that determine both the quantity, as well as the quality, of your audience. They are:
Factor 1: Your “Character”
This factor is all about making your audience see you as a multi-dimensional character instead of just an expert who knows a whole lot. Things that make up your character include:
- your heroic characteristics
- your values
- your “enemies”
- your quirks.
Essentially, if you can get your audience to connect with you like they do a character on a television show, you’re GOLDEN. This factor alone get get you very far. You can probably think of quite a few people with minimal (or zero) credibility with not very good content who still have huge followings. Most often it’s because they’ve nailed this factor. Don’t envy these people, JOIN them. With a couple of caveats of course.
Factor 2: Your Content
Generally, the better your content is, the faster you’ll be able to build authority and become more visible. Although you CAN get far with sub-par content, you’re better off making sure your content is as good as it can possibility be. With all the noise out there in the online space, I’m finding more and more that the cream really is rising to the top.
The winners of the online game are the true experts who have the highest quality content that really helps people. And this is gong to be more and more the case as time goes on.
Factor 3: Your Consistency Levels
While all three of the factors in this post are important, I’d say this one is slightly more important than other two when it comes to getting visible. This one is probably 40 percent of the battle and the Character and Content are each 30 percent.
Essentially, being more visible and building a following is all about being CONSISTENT. It’s about getting yourself out there, putting out quality content day after day, month after month, and year after year. Just like the other two factors, if ALL you did was consistently crank out content for a long period of time, you’d get VERY far. This is true even if the majority of your content is not super mind blowing.
Having said that, just being consistent and PROLIFIC is probably the most reliable path to becoming a world-class content creator. For one, it’s the best way to really hone your craft. And for another, when you put a lot of stuff out there, by the law of averages a small portion of it will probably be REALLY good and will catch fire. The only way to really find out which of your ideas the market really resonates with is to consistently put new stuff out there.
As you can see, each of these three factors in and of themselves can get you very far. But the real magic happens when you COMBINE them. Meaning that you’re going to exponentially grow your visibility when you CONSISTENTLY ship super high quality content and also bring out your heroic character in your messaging. This is how you become a TRUE thought leader who people listen to.
So get to work, okay?
Now, just so you know, there is a dark side to being visible. Running your business online opens you up to commentary from people who may never meet you or interact with you face-to-face. When I received my first mean comments, I took it so hard. They felt like a punch to the gut. But over time, as I continued to be more committed to showing up and less committed to what everyone thought about me, it has become easier
