The key to taming this beast lies in understanding and leveraging your business metrics.

 

The Power of Metrics

You’ve probably heard the saying, “What gets measured, gets improved.” Or perhaps you prefer the version by Dr. Joe Dispenza: “Where you place your attention is where you place your energy.” Regardless of which quote resonates with you, the underlying message is the same: keeping an eye on your key metrics or KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) is crucial for growing your business smoothly and efficiently.

Metrics provide a quantifiable measure of how well your business is performing in various areas. They can help you identify strengths to leverage and weaknesses to address. By tracking the right metrics, you can make informed decisions that drive growth and profitability.

 

The Challenge of Embracing Metrics

Now, I understand that not everyone is a numbers person. Maybe you’re more of a visual thinker. Maybe you’ve been relying on intuition and gut feeling to run your business. And that’s okay. But let me tell you, making decisions without relying on numbers can feel like trying to grow your business blindfolded.

So what’s the solution? Firstly, don’t rush to sign up for a dashboard software and funnel all your numbers into it. You might end up staring at a wall of numbers that don’t mean much and go from partial visibility to data overload.

Instead, decide on two things:

  1. What are the metrics that matter to you? These should be metrics that directly relate to your business goals and objectives. They could include financial metrics like revenue and profit margins, customer metrics like acquisition cost and retention rate, or operational metrics like productivity rates or order fulfillment times.

  2. What’s the best solution for tracking those numbers right now? This could be as simple as a spreadsheet or as complex as a custom-built dashboard. The key is to choose a solution that fits your current needs and capabilities.

Remember, it’s all about gaining enough visibility into the metrics that truly matter at this moment.
